Name the Artist

Here's an image by a well-known artist. The game is simply be the first to identify the artist.

My thinking was that since there is, as far as I can tell, no easy way to Google the answer, it's not susceptible to cheating. Same with Wikipedia.

UPDATE: The game is a good one but this one was just way too obscure! No one but a specialist would have ever guessed that this artist painted this work. I think the next one should be easier.

It looks Guernica-like, so would be Picasso-esque.

Hint: red abstract

Decent guesses. The artist is familiar to most people who can name two or more galleries in N.Y.

The artist changed style quite noticeably from this early work, in his later years. ( A clue, but not much of one!)

SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER

Maybe it's because it's just impossible to deduce without already knowing.

The painting is early work by artist Mark Rothko.

Very different from the later work!

Oops. Forgot to say it's named "Red Abstract" painted in '44 according to this site

My guess would have been Kadinsky since it looks a lot like this one
